HP LaserJet 1000 Laser Printer

The HP Laserjet 1000 is the smallest and cheapest of the Laserjet range from HP costing around $160. The Laserjet 1000 is an attempt by HP to enter the cheap, bottom end of the laser printer markets - home or (very) small office and its limitations as a laser printer are due to concessions by HP to keep that price as low as possible.

On the plus side the Laserjet 1000 is very easy to install (just plug it in, switch it on and put the CD in the drive), but is limited to USB for connectivity (sorry no parallel port option) and is therefor not compatible with the Apple Mac. It is a small printer but with an input tray storage of 250 sheets can contain all the paper you need for substantial print runs; although the out put tray will only hold half of that. Hewlett Packard claims 10 pages per minute (and our own tests falling short of that) you will be waiting some time - so if you are needing lots of copies quickly - you are advised to look somewhere else.

Quality of the HP Laserjet 1000

Quality wise the HP Laserjet 1000 does its job, however, this job is at the bottom end of the Laser Printer market and the graphics printing is a bit blotchy and unclear. It is a good-looking printer and small enough not to take up too much room on your desktop. The fact that the input tray is non removable does cause some problems loading paper, but this printer is so quiet you will be wondering whether it is printing at all.

Finally the HP Laserjet is cheap to run at 2.6 cents per page which is slightly cheaper than the Samsung ML 1250, and you can recycle empty toner cartridges through the postage paid envelopes to HP, which are included in the box.

Specifications for the HP Laserjet 1000:

HP Laserjet 1000 Has Tough Competition

With this model HP is competing head to head for your dollar in this market with the likes of Samsung's ML 1250 and Brother's HL 1040 and this is some stiff competition. Before the 1000 Laserjet was released the entry level for Hewlett Packard was the $400 HP Laserjet 1200and this will encourage those to pick the Laserjet 1000 over it's keenly priced competitors.

Drawback for the HP Laserjet 1000

At the end of the day the HP Laserjet 1000 is a cheap printer for the budget conscious out there, and is slow with a print quality far inferior to the more expensive in the HP stable. Unfortunately the HP 1000 also falls short of the competition, the Samsung ML 1250 in terms of print speed, for text alone, but is faster for pages with text and graphics: these graphics are far from ideal though.

Mac or Linnux with the HP 1000 Laserjet

The HP Laserjet 1000 laser printer will not work if you own a Mac, or if you are running Linnux.

Our Conclusion on the HP Laserjet 1000

The HP Laserjet 1000 is a small and cheap printer that is easy to install, cheap to run and backed up by the superb after sale service that you receive when you buy an HP product. If you are wanting some serious printing done, you should look further up the Hewlett Packard range, such as the 1200 or replacement model 1300 or even the Brother HL 1440 which has better print quality that is faster for only another $60 or so.
